Kodagu District

History:

Kodagu, Former Courg District, Southwestern Karnataka, Southwestern India. Located at the southern tip of the Western Ghats, it is a steep hilly area with high annual rainfall and altitude mitigation. Dense forest hills often exceed 1,500 meters and rise from the Karnataka Plateau. Notable mountains over 1,600 meters high are Tadramol, Pushpagiri and Kottebetta. The name Courgu is probably the fall of the canary Kodagu ("steep"). Kodagu is drained by the upper Kaveli River and its tributaries, and legendarily has some of the life-giving properties of the Ganges (Ganges).
