History:

The Tengnoupal region was recorded in the Manipur Central region in 1974 under the Manipur Gazette Extra Ordinary No.30 dated 11-05-74. The district consisted of 3 (three) subdivisions namely, Chandel, Chakpikarong, and Tengnoupal as of 3.1.1994. On 4.1.1994 another sub-division called the March sub-division came under. Under the Extra Ordinary Manipur Gazette Notification No.174 August 1983, the name of all the Manipur districts was changed and the names of the whole region were renamed. headquarters for each district while naming the appropriate district and therefore the Tengnoupal district became the Chandel district because Chandel is the regional headquarters.
