About Dimapur District

History:

Dimapur is the ancient capital of the Kachari tribe, whose rule existed before the 13th century AD. Monuments to the glory of this empire can be found in the ruins of the city and its surroundings. The district takes its name from the Kachari language; ‘Di’ - meaning river, ‘ma’ - meaning big or large, and ‘pur’ - meaning city, together meaning ‘town near the main river’. The fact that the Kachari kingdom prospered in Dimapur in ancient times is indicated by the existence of the ruins of the Kachari Rajbari Fort and the ancient stone houses.
