Introduction

The state is located in the northern region of India. Chandigarh is the capital and Ludhiana is the largest city in the state. It comprises 22 districts. The state is famous for its five rivers. 

History 

During India's Independence, the state was created from the partition of the Western and Eastern Punjab. Now, Western Punjab is under Pakistan and Eastern Punjab is under India. The other small Punjabi princely states were also merged into Punjab like Patiala.

Fairs and festivals

The various fairs and festivals are celebrated throughout the year such as baba Sodal Mela, nor Mela, Vaishakhi, Harivallabh sangeet festival, Patiala heritage festival, and much more. All these fairs and festivals are celebrated by the Punjabis with enthusiasm and excitement.

Geography

Punjab covers an area of 50,362 km². The boundary extended to Jammu and Kashmir in the north, Haryana, and Punjab in the south, Pakistan in the west, and Himachal Pradesh in the northeast. The soil of Punjab is divided into three regions – central, eastern, and southwestern. There are five major rivers such as Ravi, Satluj, Jhelum, Beas, and Chenab.

Demographics 

The total population of the state is 27,743,338 of which 14,639,465 are males and 13,103,873 are females as per the 2011 census. The majority religion in Punjab is Sikhism.

Culture

Punjab is rich in cultural heritage. Their tasty food, fancy outfits, and Bhangra will snatch your heart. Punjabis are so kind and helpful and their hospitality is so amazing. The traditional attire of women and men is so vibrant and colorful. Salwar kameez is the women's attire, and men’s attire is a kurta and Tehmat along with turbans. Amritsar is famous for its metalwork. One famous tradition is story-telling in the Kissa language.

Language

Punjabi is the official as well as the local language of the state, while English and Urduares also used by most of the people of Punjab.

Tourism

Punjab is a place of historical palaces. It has grand Sikh architecture. The spiritual sites are the golden temple in Amritsar and the Devi Talab Mandir in Jalandhar. The state has the first museum based on partition and is known as the Partition Museum. The golden temple and the Jallianwala Bagh are the pride of the state. 

Education

The state has served 23 universities under graduation and post-graduation. The education on Yoga and Neuropathy is also increasing in Punjab. The first college that was established in Dinanagar town is Regional College Dinanagar.

Dances and music

The state has different styles of music such as devotional music, classical music, folk music, and Sufi music. The devotional music is Gurbani sangeet and classical music is Patiala Gharana and Punjab Gharana.

Cuisine

The taste of Punjabi cuisine has flavors of spices. They mainly use ghee in cooking. The most popular drink is Lassi. The most popular traditional dish is Makki di roti and Sarson da saag. Other popular dishes are tandoori chicken, chole Bhature, butter chicken, shami kebab, and Amritsari fish.
