About Nicobar

History:

The existence of Nicobars has been around since the time of Ptolemy, but the site has a long, unpublished history. Citizens were connected to the outside world by copra trade. However, the entry of the modern world into their lives began after the famous Vascodigama journey to India. In 1870 they established a panel settlement in Kamorta and closed in 1888. The islands were put on board by the A&N Islands Chief Commissioner in 1871. During the 1920s, the British Government appointed Mr. E. Hert as Assistant to the first Nicobars Commissioner. On August 1, 1974, the Nicobar archipelago was declared a separate district from its headquarters in Car Nicobar, where half the population lives. With the exception of three Panchayat and one Panchayat Samiti in Great Nicobar, the entire region has its own traditional councils.
