Hemkund Sahib

Hemkund is a Sikh pilgrimage. As the name implies, Hemkund is a Himalayan lake. There are many lakes in the Himalayas, but few are as dramatic as Hemkund. At an altitude of 4,500 meters above sea level and hundreds of meters above the tree limit, the lake sits like a jewel on the seven peaks of Himalayan's most beautiful snowy mountains. This surreal landscape, composed primarily of rocks and ice, has no animal or human habitat. A Sikh pilgrimage, Hemkund rejuvenates your soul. It's a traditional pilgrimage. There are no hotels, restaurants, mechanized transportation, and not many chai shops. Hemkund is a 2-day walk from the nearest road. If you can't walk, it's best to ride a dubious pony. Meals and accommodation are provided free of charge by two Gurdwaras for pilgrims. Commercialism, the greatest enemy of spirituality, is so neglected that truly aspiring pilgrims are unaware. Staying in Gurdwara forces us to be impressed by their religious enthusiasm. This is believed to be the main reason why this pilgrimage maintains its strict character.
