Considered a gateway to northeastern India, Guwahati is the largest city in the province of Assam. It is also the largest city in the northeastern region of India, making it one of the most popular stage venues in the region. The town, known as Pragjyotishpura, is sandwiched by the Brahmaputra River on one side and the Shillong Plateau on the other. The name Guwahati is derived from a combination of two Assamese words - 'Guwa' meaning Areca Nut and 'Haat' meaning market. The capital of the Assam region, Dispur, is located within Guwahati. Served by Lokpriya Gopinath International Airport to the west and India's first solar-powered railway station in its heart, the city is well connected to other regional and Indian destinations. Millions of people each year cross the city to earn a living, to travel, or for religious purposes. The Kamakhya Temple, located on the Nilachal Hill and dedicated to the goddess Kamakhya, is played by thousands of devotees each day. Pilgrims and pilgrims flock to this sanctuary during the Ambubachi Mela each year. Apart from the Kamakhya Temple, other sacred temples such as Umananda and Navagraha are located in the city.
