goalpara
Goalpara is a town located 140 km West from Guwahati which is approximately 3 hours by car. It is a regional headquarters with the same name. The name 'Gwaltippika', probably translated from Guwali Village or Milk Men's Village is the origin of the name 'Goalpara'. The surrounding areas of Goalpara are usually large green plains on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, creating fertile farmland. Two waterfalls, the Urpad Beel and the Kumri Beel, located about 15 miles [15 km] from the city are known for handling a wide variety of migratory birds during the winter. Some parts of the region are covered with evergreen hills and trees, which form continuous tunnels. The city of Goalpara and the region are well-known for their cultural heritage sites and archeological sites. Shyamrai Sattra is an important center for the preservation and learning of the Vaishnavite culture founded by Shimanta Sankardeva. Sree Chaitanya Gaudiya Math, another cultural site associated with Sri Krishna Chaitanya culture, hosts many events and festivals according to the Shri Krishna Chaitanya calendar. Archaeological sites such as Pir Majhar and Sri Surjya Pahar are also historically important. Goalpara offers a welcoming season almost year-round without monsoons. Regular showers make it easy for tourists to explore the city.
