Located on the river Surma (Barak), and known for its natural beauty and natural splendor, Silchar is surrounded by Manipur to the east, Bangladesh to the west, Mizoram to the south, and the Barail hills to the north. Located south of Guwahati at a distance of 313 km, the village is considered to be the most important center and gateway to the Barak Valley in Assam. Silchar is the second largest city in Assam and is one of the most stable in the Northeast and that is why the area is called Peace Island. It is also one of the most developed areas with an airport and higher education institutions. Due to its beautiful location, Silchar is also used as a gateway to the neighboring areas of Manipur and Mizoram. About 90% of Silchar's population is Bengali speaking the Sylheti dialect, all others are Bishnupriya Manipuri, Dimasa Kachari (Barman), Manipuri (Meitei), Marwaris, Assamese, and certain ethnic groups such as the Nagas. Silchar is home to the world's first polo club and the first competitive polo game. In 1985, an Air India flight from Kolkata to Silchar became the world's first female airline. Silchar was a tea city and the Cachar club was a meeting place for tea growers.
