Bodh Gaya is a religious site and pilgrimage associated with the Mahabodhi Temple Complex in the Gaya region of the Indian state of Bihar. It is famous as the place where Gautama Buddha is said to have received the Light under what is known as the Board Tree. Bodh Gaya is a Buddhist pilgrimage to the Gaya District of Bihar. Famous for the Mahabodhi Temple, It was here under the Bodhi tree that Gautama Buddha received enlightenment. It is now one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and many foreign countries, including Japan and China, have assisted the Indian government in constructing Buddhist pilgrimages. The area is bustling with year-round pilgrims from India and abroad who come to pay homage to monasteries, temples, and the remains of the Bodhi Tree. Located near the Neranjana River, Bodh Gaya was formerly known as Uruwela. It was also known as Sambodhi, Vajrasana, or Mahabodhi until the 18th century CE It is one of four important Buddhist sites including Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath. Bodhgaya is one of the most important and sacred Buddhist pilgrimages in the world. It was here under the banyan tree, the Bodhi Tree, that Gautama acquired enlightenment to become the Buddha, the Enlightened One.
