History:
Puducherry, originally named Putucheri, formerly (until 2006) Puducherry was also spelled as Pondicherry, the Union Territory of India. It was formed in 1962 from four former colonies of French India. Pondicherry and Karaikar along the southeastern Coromandel Coast of India, surrounded by Tamil Nadu. Further north along the east coast of the Godavari River Delta, Yanam is located on the western Malabar coast, surrounded by Kerala. The original name of the territory, Putucceri, is derived from the Tamil words putu ("new") and ceri ("village"). The French corrupted it into Puducherry (English: Pondicherry), which was then named until it was officially renamed Puducherry in 2006.
