Located in the West Champaran region, Valmiki National Park is located on the India-Nepal border on the banks of the Gandak River. Widespread in the arid region, the park is divided into two sections - a wildlife sanctuary declared in 1978 covering an area of ??545 sq km and a national park established in 1990 covering an area of ??about 335 sq km. Valmiki National Park gets its name from Valmiki Nagar - a forest-connected town that is also the only entrance to the wildlife sanctuary.
