Lauriya Nandangarh is a village 28 km northwest of Bettiah famous for its well-built Ashokan Pillar. Lauriya derives its name from the pillar (Laur) of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka, placed here. Nandangarh is the name of a bank, located about 2 miles southwest of the Ashoka Pillar. Lauriya Nandangarh is also home to about 20 archeological banks. Forty pillars were erected here by Emperor Ashoka at first but today only one existing monument is in perfect condition, in its original location at Lauriya Nandangarh. Lauriya Nandangarh is a historic town in the state of Bihar and is located 14 miles [22 km] from the district of Bettiah. Lauriya Nandangarh boasts of the Ashokan pillar abode, which contains six Ashokan pronouncements. The height of the pillar is over twelve feet and even after so many years, the Mauryan polish used in this pillar retains its lightness and sheen. The pillar is inscribed with six Ashokan proclamations, issued by the Emperor in the year 244 BC and the top of the pillar is adorned with a lion, on the hill. One of the major tourist attractions in Lauriya Nandangarh is the large stupa, which is believed to be one of the largest stupas in India. The large stupa is 24m long and has a circumference of about 457 m.
