About East Garo Hills
History:
East Garo Hills was founded in 1976 after the former Garo Hills of Meghalaya was reorganized to bring administration closer to the people. The district headquarters complex, named after Captain Williamson A. William Nagar, is located on the plains of the Simzan River. These plains are, in a sense, historic. It was here that the Garo people established their last great position in 1837. The legendary Garo leader was defeated by British troops near William Nagar on December 12, 1837.
