History:
West Jaintia Hills District is one of the major tribes of Meghalaya, commonly known as "Jaintia" or "Punal". Like the Khasi, the Jaintians are believed to be the remnants of the first Mongolian asylum to India. They settled in their present hometown long ago and managed to maintain independence until the British government was integrated in that part of India, mainly due to geographical isolation.

Jaintia is famous for weaving and making mats, stools and baskets from reeds. It is also famous for carpets and silk weaving. They also weave the fabric.
