About Kollam District

History:

In 1503, the Queen of Travancore invited the Portuguese, who arrived in Kerala in 1498, to trade with Kollam. Over time, the Portuguese managed to build fortresses and settlements there, beginning the colonial history of Kollam. The oldest name in the Kollam is "Desinganadu" after King Jayasima, who is said to be a descendant of the Venad dynasty. The name Kollam has a long etymology that leaves a trace of the place's centuries-old history. The Kollam was the capital of the Kingdom of Travancore. British troops arrived at this point, and later the East India Company established control over Travancore.
