About Kottayam District

History:

Kottayam literally means the interior of the fortress-Cotta + Akamu. The rulers of Munjanad and Thekkumkur were headquartered in what is now Thazhathangadi, Kottayam. Travancore's Marthanda Varma attacked Thekkumkur, destroying Thaliyil's palace and fortress. Today's Kottayam district was formerly part of the former Principality. Historically, the state of Travancore consisted of two revenue divisions. In late 1868, two more divisions, Quilon (Kollam) and Kottayam, were established. The tax department was renamed to the district, and Diwan Peshkar gave way to district collectors, paving the way for the birth of the Kottayam district in July 1949.
