History:
In 1919, the British Government established four-division offices in Manipur Hills known as the North East Sub-Division, North West Sub-Division, South East Sub-Division, and South West Sub-Division. The North West sub-district headquarters was established in Khunjao, Tamenglong Village (Nriangluang), and Mr. William Shaw was appointed Chief Executive Officer. In 1923, the Northwest division of the Northwest was moved to what is now known as Tamenglong headquarters about two miles [3 km] from Khunjao. Tamenglong became a full-fledged district in 1969 and was replaced by the first Deputy Commissioner.
