Solapur District

History:

"SOLAPUR" is probably derived from two words, "SOLA" for 16 and "PUR" for village. In the Islamic era, the city was known as Sonarpur. Therefore, over time, it is very likely that the name Solapur has evolved by removing the "na" from the name Sonalpur. Later, the British ruler pronounced Sorapur as Shorapour and therefore announced the name of the district. Today's Solapur district was once part of the Ahmed Nagar, Pune and Satara districts. In 1838 it became a subdivision of Ahmed Nagar. This included the subdivisions of Barsi, Mohol, Mada, Karmala, Indy, Hippargi and Mudebihar. In 1864, this quasi-district was abolished.
