Kalaburagi District

History:

GULBARGA was formerly known as "KALBURAGI". This means rocky land in Kannada. Now this district is again known as "KALABURAGI". The recorded history of the area dates back to the 6th century. The Rashtrakuta dynasty gained control of the region, but the Charkya dynasty quickly regained territory and took control for over 200 years. The Kalahari Desert, which took over them, dominated until the end of the 12th century. Devagiri's Yadavas destroyed the supremacy of Chalukyas and Kalachuris. In 1321 AD, the entire Deccan, including the Kalaburagi district, was placed under the control of the Islamic emperor of Delhi.
