Khunti is like a rebellion and a struggle as it was historically a center of activity during the famous Birsa movement in 1875. The ranch district was divided into four administrative divisions namely sadar, Gumla (1902), Khunti (1905) and Simdega (1915). The area is on the list of historical records recorded for its long struggle against the British under the name of Birsa Munda, the hero of the Jharkhand struggle. Khunti is well known as a lac producer in the Jharkhand region. A large portion of the complete Indian lac is produced locally.
