About Lohardaga District

History:

The Lohardaga region came into being after the Ranchi was divided into three districts namely Ranchi, Lohardaga and Gumla back in 1983. The district is named after the city of Lohardaga, the administrative capital of the region. Lohardaga was given the position of sub division in 1972 and district in 1983. Jain texts refer to King Mahavir's visit to Lore-a-Yadaga, meaning 'river of tears' in Mundari. 'Ain-e-akbari', a popular book in Akbar, also mentions a place called 'Kismate Lohardaga'. The word Lohardaga may be made up of two Hindi words, Lohar meaning ‘merchant of metal’, and an institution that means Daga.
