About Madurai District
Madurai is one of the longest-lived cities in the world and is the largest city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Madurai prospered until the 10th century AD when it was captured by Cholas, a major rival of the Pandyas. The Chola ruled Madurai from 920 AD until the beginning of the 13th century. In 1223 AD the Pandyas regained their empire and prospered again. The Pandian Kings support the Tamil language in an excellent way.
