History:
Thiruvarur is also listed as Tiruvaru as a city and municipality in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the administrative headquarters of Thiruvarur district and Thiruvarur taluk. Inscriptions on the temple depict Thiruvarur as the capital of Kulothunga Chola I, where the region emerged from the center of saivism. After the collapse of the Cholas during the reign of Rajendra Chola II in the 13th century, the region was captured under a power struggle between the Pandyas and Hoysalas.
