History:
Nagapattinam (nākappaṭṭinam, formerly known as Nagapatnam or Negapatam) is a town in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and administrative headquarters of the Nagapattinam District. Nagapattinam based on Nagar refers to people from Sri Lanka who live here and pattinam referring to the city. The town was taken over by the British in Dutch in 1781 (who had been officially drafted into the army in 1780). When the Dutch and the British reached a peace treaty in 1784, Nagapattinam was officially granted to the British.
