It first came into existence as a district on 26 January 2013, but came into operation on 15 August 2013. The capital of Lunawada district of Lunavada is the capital of the Mahisagar region. The regional name Mahisagar is derived from "Mahi River". Lunawada is the capital of the Mahisagar region. It became fully operational on 15 August 2013. It came into full effect on 15 August 2013.
