History:
Sonepur, also known as Sonpur State, was one of the provinces of India during the British Raj era. Sonepur province was founded in 1650 when Chauhan's fourth governor of Sambalpur Madhukar Dev, conquered the region from the Banja dynasty of Boudh and handed it over to his young son Madan Gopal who became the founder of the Chauhan dynasty in Sonepur. The former regional site is located in the present-day suburb of Subarnapur, Odisha.
