Jabalpur District

History:

Jabalpur (formerly Jubbulpore) is a town on the Narmada River in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. Legend has it that three Asuris in the Jabalpur region were defeated by the Hindu god Shiva. Tripurasura as the main asura, gave the city its puranic name Tripur Tirth. Historically, the royal center of Kalachuri and Gond, the city developed a culture of reconciliation influenced by the interim rule of Mughal and Maratha. In 2006, Jabalpur Municipal Corporation renamed the city Jabalpur. Jabalpur is an important administrative, industrial and business center in Madhya Pradesh.

Jabalpur is the administrative headquarters of the Jabalpur region (the second most populous region in Madhya Pradesh) and the Jabalpur region. It is also the largest educational center in India. The city is known for its marble stones on the Narmada River at Bedaghat.
