Vidisha District

History:

Vidisha (formerly known as Belsa and known as Besnagar in ancient times) is a city located in the heart of Madhya Pradesh, India. The name "Vidisha" is derived from the nearby river "Bais", referred to in the Puranas. The district was formed as the Bilsa District in 1904 by joining the tehsils of Vidisha (also known as the Bilsa) and Basoda, but not Basoda Province, then part of the Gwalior region. After the liberation of India in 1947, the former prince of Gwalior became part of the Madhya Bharat region, which was formed in 1948.
