Shahdol District

History:

Shahdol Province is the district of Madhya Pradesh in northeastern India. The ancient name was Massa raj or Virat empire in the name of the great king Maharaja Virata. The city of Shahdol is the capital of the region. The region previously included the Shahdol division. The district was named after Shahdolwa Ahir of Sohagpur village who is believed to have founded the former town of Shahdol about 2.5 miles [2.5 km] away. from Sohagpur. The ancestor of the Ex-Illakadar family of Sohagpur, Jamni Bhan was the second son of Maharaja Virbhan Singh of Bagelkhand.
